White Jeans

Liz Hurley was really on to something all those years ago. If you’ve been privately pining to look as insouciant as a French fashion editor (because who hasn’t?), white denim is the key. Don’t quite have model pins? Look for a looser fit and a few strategic rips. Tres cool.

Ijen The Irresistable

Mount Ijen, located between Banyuwangi and Bondowoso regencies boasts a phenomenon that can only be seen in two places in the entire globe, which is the blue fire. The bluish flames of burning molten sultur can be seen inside the crater, which can be seen at night until just before sunrise. To reach the peak, you will have to ascend 3km of the mountain, usually starting around midnight. We started our journey at 4am just before sunrise and was extremely lucky.

DSC07488 DSC07494

Sulphur is extracted from the lake and a vulcanology post just below the crater. The sulphur collectors hike up in the morning and return around 1pm when the clouds rolls in. Trekkers are advised to do the same, but the clouds often disappear in the late afternoon.

DSC07509 DSC07496

The best time to make the hike is in the dry season between April and October.

Travellers are advise to wear comfortable shoes and warm clothes.

Candi Ijo – Yogyakarta

Candi Ijo, the GreenTemple, is perched at the top of a hill, 410m above sea level, and is thus the highest temple in the region of Yogyakarta. Perfect panorama vista of sunrises and sunsets, Candi Ijo consisted of 17 buildings divided into 11 terraces. If the major elements of this temple are Hindu, Buddhist symbolism scattered throughout the site suggests that at similarly served both regions, though perhaps at different times.

The Affandi Museum – Jogja

The Affandi Museum lies in Jalan Laksda Adisucipto 167. on the main road connecting Yogyakarta and Solo, on the west bank of GajahwongRiver. The whole complex siyuated on a 3500 square meter of land consisting of the museum and another where Affandi lived himself.

There are three galleries that permanently exhibit a collection of paintings. The first was opened in 1974.

 DSC09485 DSC09469

The paintings consists of sketches on paper, watercolors, pastel, oil paintings on canvas and a number of selected reproductions.

The third gallery was built by the Affandi Foundation and finished in 1999. It was built to fulfill Affandi’s last wish to have a sufficient storage for his collection.

Candi Sewu (Thousand Temples)

The Temple of Love and Betrayal.

ETF Candi Sewu 1 DSC09170

When coming to Jogja, the Prambanan temple complex is one of the highlights to visit in the area. This Hindu temple compound is the largest in Indonesia and dates back to the 9th century. Most tourist go straight for the main temple complex however just 800 meters north lies Candi Sewu. My favourite.

DSC09177 DSC09199

They temple dates back to the 8th century and was likely completed by the Medang King, Ratai Pikatan, who married a Buddhist princess. However nobody seems knows the real story behind these magnificient temples.

DSC09231 DSC09255

To visit Candi Sewu, you enter through the main gate at the Prambanan temple compound. Follow the signs to the bicycle rental and train tours, you could take any of these however if you have time and its not too hot I would recommend walking. Before you reach Candi Sewu you will see a row of temples that are no longer intact and temple stones piled everywhere. The complex was severely damaged during the 2006 earthquake.

DSC09213 DSC09217

The main temple in the centre is the largest one in the complex and has been completely refurbished, and you can go inside safely. Iron framing is embedded in the structure, and some stones have been replaced with newer ones. But overall the temple looks beautiful and majestic, with the shape and reliefs maintaining its authenticity.

DSC09294 DSC09359

Candi Sewu is the second largest Buddihist temple in Indonesia after Borobudur.

Hope you enjoy Candi Sewu as much as I did.

Buy Now, Wear Forever #4

All hail Coco Chanel and the sartorial saviour that is the little black dress. There’s no occasion it refuses to shine for – morning (cue Audrey Hepburn in Givenchy, munching pastries and coffee out front of Tiffany’s) or evening. The LBD packs ridiculous amounts of personality in all it’s forms, boxy shifts, flirty A-line, strapless, bodycon … you name it. And boy is it versatile, everyone from Jackie Onassis to the slick haired back up singers in Robert Palmer’s Addicted to Love clip (well worth You Tube-ing) has given it a fashion moment. Whether you fall for one cut from demure lace, just made for high tea with the girls, or a leather mini dress begging for cocktails this weekend, it’s the universal symbol of confident chic – think Lady Di stepping out in the media dubbed “revenge dress”, or the one and only Debbie Harry rocking out on stage. LBD is fashion code for “I’m awesome, and you and everyone else should know it”. Plus, Kate Moss has been turning to it for decades, which makes it the defining piece of everlasting cool.

Kate Moss proves that the little black dress works time and time again.

The White Shirt

It’s as chic fitted as it is oversized (read: nicked from his closet). Patti Smith canonized the Great White androgynous appeal by slinging suspenders over it on the cover of her Horses album – a baton carried for this generation by a dungaree-clad Alexa Clung and Man Repeller blogger Leandra Medine. And who says Tom Cruise is the only one who can make it work sans pants? Jennifer Anniston looked smoking in a white shirt and not much else on the cover of Vanity Fair. But you don’t have to borrow from the boys – tied in a knot with a hint of skin, the white shirt is all out sexy, paired with cut offs, it’s no wonder Johnny snatched Baby from the corner. If stiff cotton is too prim, try silk – perfect for nailing an effortless “half tuck” without the bulk. Fashion’s ultimate multi tasker can do red carpet glam one minute (Sharon Stone’s Gap shirt and satin maxi combo at the ’98 Oscars is proof of that) and daytime minimalism the next. Just ask Jill Sander – she’d be lost without it.

Buy Now, wear Forever #1

The ultimate (time) capsule wardrobe that promises to kept you cool no matter what era. This is four part series consisting of the trench coat, the LBD, the leather jacket and the white shirt.

 The Trench

Burberry’s mainstay has evolved a lot over time, but there’s no mistaking the pulled-together polish of an “ I-mean-business” trench coat – even these days when it’s dipped in shades of metallic. While trenches were first made for men (in military), women have long rocked it best. Think Agent 99 in Get Smart – she was always so much cuter than Max when they were crime busting. A trench can be sexy too, especially belted tightly at the waist to accentuate curves, or with nothing but bare legs the way Victoria Beckham like it. Look to K-Mid, who kept her basic cream number modest with matchy black tights, clutch and low heeled pumps. To give the signature style a more playful edge, try a brightly colored or printed version or switch to single breasted or lose the lapels altogether. Don’t worry about matching hemlines – a trench is the one piece of outerwear that somehow manages to suit thigh-high, to the floor and pretty much every length in between.

Love the belt detail.

The Magic of Mount Bromo

Mountain lovers will be no stranger to this active volcano, a part of Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park. Start your Mt. Bromo trip with a ride to the lookout point on Gunung Pananjakan with a hardtop Jeeps that are available to hire. If you’re lucky, you’ll be treated to a magnificient sunrise and view of Mount Bromo, Mount Batok, and in the far distance, Mount Semeru. Walk down and the jeep driver will take you to the savannah. Enjoy the vast views and be sure to take plenty of pictures! Don’t miss out on the sand dunes known as “Pasir Berbisik” and the luscious green hills that our guide called “Bukit Teletubbies” because it resembles those featured on the children’s show. If you’re still got strenght in your stride, climb up the stairs to see the crater of Mount Bromo.

Getting started: The small village of Cemoro Lawang, 46km from Probolinggo is perched on the crater’s edge and has grown up largely to service tourists who visit the Bromo region. It’s the easiest place from which to set off on the pre-dawn excursion to Gunung Bromo itself. There is a national park post where you pay admission to the park or you can buy a ticket from your hotel. You can also arranged for a jeep and driver from the hotel.

Must bring: A coat or jacket. For extra warmth, bring gloves, hat or a scarf. Eraly mornings are dusty and dark, a flashlight would be handy as well.

The Minions are back

The line between films for children and adults has blurred over the years. Take Despicable Me, its an uplifting story, which dealt with the themes of redemption and the power of love, and how could you not love the extremely adorable characters, especially the too-cute-to-be-true yellow minions and the hilarious lines like “It’s so fluffy, I’m going to dieeeeeeeeeeeee!”. The great news is that ex-scheming evildoer-turned-lovable parental figure Dr Gru, his girls and the minions are back for a sequel.. Expect more side-splitting antics from Gru and company.

Five shoes every woman should own

The black pumps – a quality pair of basic black heels can be worn with anything, and will never date. A  round toe is flattering, classic and easier to walk in than a pointed heel. High heeled pumps have the ability to give you towering height, and will make you feel sexy, confident and glamorous. Plus, they instantly make your legs leaner and longer. Who can argue with that?

The ballet flats – this essential everyday shoe will give any outfit a chic feel. Show a little toe cleavage with a lower cut style to flatter your legs more.

The neutral heels – it’s a great alternative to basic black, and sweet champagne shade will make your legs appear longer.

The strappy sandals – basic leather sandals are made for relaxed days, or when you wish you were having one! Neutral, paler shades elongate your legs, while metallic or sparkly style is just fun. Black strappy sandals are perfect for summer evening – my favourite for date night: the caged strappy heel.

The booties – With a small heel, ankle booties look dressier than flat boots but are still comfy to walk around in. Team them with tights in winter, or wear with a floaty dress in summer. Watch how high they sit – they shouldn’t go far above your ankles.

Graffiti – Semarang Indonesia

“Graffiti is one of the few tools you have if you have almost nothing, and even if you don’t come up with a picture to cure world poverty you can make someone smile while they’re having a piss.” Banksy, the anonymous street artist who now commands outrageous prices for his art.

Here are some random graffiti taken in Semarang.

Royal Evolution

The evolution of royal style.

Long before Kate Middleton became the Duchess of Cambridge and was credited with influencing shopping trends in the UK and abroad, there was Princess Diana and her covetable collection of designer dresses.
The late princess supported fashion designers at every opportunity and was a style icon in the 80s and 90s. Due to colour choices and design lines, her dresses were often described as bold and her style as unconventional. Yes, her style was unlike Princess Margaret’s or Queen Elizabeth II’s, but that’s due to the evolution of fashion, and now an upcoming exhibition is set to showcase this very theme and idea.

Pictured above: The evolution of royal style: the exhibition will showcase dresses worn by Queen Elizabeth II, Princess Margaret and Princess Diana

The Fashion Rules: Dress From the Collections of HM The Queen, Princess Margaret, and Diana, Princess of Wales is set to take place at Kensington Palace on July 4, and will showcase royal styles from the more conservative 50s (Queen Elizabeth II), to the playful 60s (Princess Margaret) and the bolder 80s and 90s (Princess Diana).
Chronicling how royal style has evolved over the decades, the exhibition will include dresses worn by the royal style icons alongside photography and music from each decade. Curated by Cassie Davies-Strodder, the exhibition is a way for fashion lovers to experience royal styles in person. According to an official press statement, “Elegant dress displays will explore how these royal figures were representative of the spirit of each decade, reflecting and inspiring everyday fashions.”

Pictured above: Diana, the Princess of Wales, was renowned for her fashion-forward choices whether in couture or ready-to-wear

Kudus and around

Kudus is a fairly quiet industrial city built around Sungai Serang and it can justifiably claim to be Kota Kretek, the ubiquitous sweet smelling clove cigarettes which was mass produced for the first time here in the 1920s and today over 25 kretek manufacturers are based in and around the city. We manage to visit the Kretek museum.

The western part of Kudus is quieter and prettier than the modern eastern half. Here you can find traces of the city’s past, including its most important mosque, the Mesjid Al-Aqsa. It is renowned as a centre for Islamic study. The mosque was founded in 1549 by Jafar Shodiq considered one of the nine holy saints of Indonesia.

Lying halfway between Semarang and Kudus at the southwestern corner of Gunung Muriah peninsula is Demak. Once the major port and the capital of Java’s first Islamic Kingdom. Here you will find the Grand Mosque (Mesjid Agung), the oldest in Central Java and the holiest on the whole island. Sharing the mosque’s courtyard is a small musuem, which traces the fortunes of the building through the centuries, with scale models and photos.

We’ve all been there – enchanted by a place while on vacation, we fill our suitcase with souvenirs as a sartorial love letter of sorts, only to never wear them at all. Fret no more – the spring/summer runways are awash with examples of how to showcase your travels without looking like a walking postcard. The likes of Tory Burch and Marc by Marc Jacobs worked in ethnic, folksy touches while staying true to their trademark preppy (for her) and madcap (for him) ensembles. Solo – Indonesia

Like Yogya, Solo has two royal palaces and a number of museums, evidence of a past culture that’s every bit as colorful as those of its rival. Indeed, Solo’s traditional court society is widely regarded as the most refined on Java. The dancing performance are considered to be more graceful, the poetry more “highbrow” and the court language more polished and polite. Yet Solo’s tourist industry is nowhere near as developed as Yogya’s. We stayed for a couple of days however a day trip would have been more than enough.

On our way to the temples.

First stop: Cetho Temple

It is an ancient heritage dating from the last Hindu period in Indonesia. This temple was built in 1451. It represents the cultural concept of megalithic architectural style of punden berundak- undak (storied holy place) because of the 13 stage terraces (9 of them have been restored).

It is located on the slope of Mt. Lawu, at the gates of East Java, at Gumeng Village inside the government of Karanganyar. The word “Cetho” in Javanese means “Clear” or “Obvious”. This might be related to the fact that the temple has a strategic location. At the height of 1500m, it can be seen from all over the foot of Mt. Lawu. Bali lovers would definitely recognize the shape of the main gate, typical Hindu temples. Up to this moment, the Cetho temple is still used as a place for religious ceremonies by the local citizens who are mostly Hindu.

Second stop: Sukuh temple

This is one of the less known temples in South East Asia. It is also located on the slope of Mt. Lawu, more than 1000m above sea level. One of the main unique aspects is that despite of the fact that Indonesian society is quite strong and standardized concerning sexual topics, this temple is full of erotic ornaments. Also, shaped as a Mayan Pyramid, this temple raises a lot of theories concerning its origins. Was it linked in a way with the South and Middle American societies? Was it built using the concept back to pre-historic Megalithic culture? Up to date none of these theories has been declared as fact. This temple is still a complete mystery. Exploring these temples made me feel like Indiana Jones.

Last stop for the day: Batik museum

Unfortunately the museum was closed but the cafe wasn’t.

Prambanan Plain- Yogya

Prambanan Plain is a patchwork blanket of sun-spangled paddy-fields and vast plantations of wheat, maize and cane, sweeping down from the southern slopes of the volcano. As well as being one of the most fertile regions in Java, the plain is home to the largest concentration of ancient ruins on the island. Over thirty temples and palaces, dating mainly from the eighth and ninth centuries, lie scattered over thirty square kilometer area. Though many of these are little more than heaps of rubble lying forgotten behind thick groves of sugar cane or amongst the lush forest of the hills, a number have been restored to something approaching their original state. As you drive east along Jalan Adisucipto from Yogya, your eye will be caught by three giant, rocket shaped andesite temples, each smothered in intricate narrative carving that suddenly loom up by the side of the highway. This is the Prambanan complex, the largest Hindu complex in Java and a worthy rival of Borobudur.

Act Natural

There’s a shift of late, and Twitter should be held accountable. In years past, “stars without make-up!” pics were bread and butter for the paparazzos, but now celebrities are flipping the script. Instead of being busted sans slap, the likes of Demi Lovato, Lady Gaga and even cosmetics coveter, Kim Kardashian, are beating the long-lenses to it, snapping themselves minus their heavy duty beauty and sharing pics with millions.Clearly, there is something in the water. The Winter 2012/2013 runways went naked – with Dolce and Gabbana, Albert Ferretti and Chloe all sending out fresh faced models with nothing but a hint of concealer and lip balm.

New York Fashion Week SS 201230a0d14a7706800873a7e2486f16300c

Of course, for most of us, it’s a tad unrealistic to go cold turkey. The thought of every open pore and pimple on display for your workmates and local barista to see is the stuff bad dreams are made of. But there is something tempting about the idea of taking a make up vacay or minibreak, at least. So, rather than going totally nude, embrace clear cosmetics. Start with an invisible primer that blurs lines and pores, giving skin an even finish without foundation, like Revlon’s PhotoReady Perfecting Primer. Then coat brows and lashes with a clear gel for definition. Take a colour free balm and slick it on lips, then press onto cheekbones and lids for an all over glow – the sheen will reflect light away from shadowy areas. To finish, coat toes in clear polish, as seen at the spring/summer 2013 shows like Ralph Lauren and Burberry Prorsum. Granted, this won’t be the easiest adjustment – but as well as looking chic, it will give your nails a much needed breather.

Ironically, this lo-fi look requires some prep: prime nails by rubbing a little lemon juice over the surface and rinsing to remove yellow tinges, then add two coats of a clear hardener-gloss hydrid like Sally Hansen Complete Care 4 in 1 Treatment. Douse them in cuticle oil for a pedicure perfect finish, and you’re done. Practically nude, and you still look good. See? That wasn’t that hard.

Clashing Prints

Mixing patterns is a trend you don’t have to try too hard to get right and you should be able to get dressed in the dark at least once in your life. But if the clash seems scary, wear a small animal print with simple stripes or go for two prints in the same colour family.

Way too scary for me …

Love the colour combinations.

Would not be able to pull this look off but I love the shoes. I would definitely wear those!

Back Track

Bags aren’t just about how to use them, but also about interesting material and stylish shape. When you’re hitting the Mall with friends, befriending the local bookstore or going on your next holiday destination, choose the appropriate bag to put all those gadgets in.

Try a backpack. Sling over one shoulder for effortless cool.
